LESSON 1 - THE BOOK FOR THE NOW GENERATION
OUR GENERATION IS INSECURE
Our generation is insecure in spite of the success of science and technology. We are faced with a mountain of unanswered questions:
The Bible has conclusive answers to today's questions, and solutions to today's problems. It's well worth reading!
We know that many people don't know what to make of the Bible. They believe that reading the Bible is a waste of time. Admittedly, the true worth of the Bible is not as obvious as bargains at a sale, but it is certain that whoever is not afraid of spending time with the Bible will gain from it. He will have a special experience with the Author of this Book.
LETTERS OF APPRECIATION
'I am sick and often in great pain. For me the Bible is a real help in my life. Every day I learn that God is alive and does not make mistakes.' K. E. (Housewife)

'I have always wanted to get to know the Bible better. By means of a Bible correspondence course I was able to do so. The Bible can help you in every situation in life. For me God is no longer dead, but He has begun to live again.' V.K.
'I read the Bible because it is like a mirror in which I can recognise myself It shows me my condition in every part of life - my inherited tendencies, my character. In defeat and despair there is nothing better than this Book. Nothing heals or helps as does the Bible.' Dr. C. M.
IN ITS OWN WORDS
The Bible wants to introduce us to God again and to renew our personal relationship with Him In Scripture we find the following words from God.
'"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."' Isaiah 41:10
In addition we find out in the Bible everything about Gods plan for human beings.
'He wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men.'
I Timothy 2:4-6
Safety and security are promised us in an insecure world.
'He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall never be shaken. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.' Psalm 62:2,8.
We are given direction in a world of confusion.
'I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.' Psalm 32.8.
God wants to instil in us peace in a world without peace.
"'I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."' John 16:33.
Our past is put straight God removes our guilt.
'If we confess our sins, be is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.' I John 1:9.
WHEN YOU ARE WORRIED.
'Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.' I Peter 5:7.
WHEN PEOPLE LET YOU DOWN.
'It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.' Psalm 118:8.
WHEN YOU ARE DISCOURAGED.
'When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stout-hearted.' Psalm 138:3.
WHEN DOUBTS DISTURB YOU.

'It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.' Lamentations 3:26.

WHEN YOU HAVE REASON TO BE THANKFUL.
'Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything.' Ephesians 5:20.
It pays to spend time with the Bible every day. Choose the time which suits you best.
Read the Bible when it is quiet and there are no distractions. Read it in small portions.
Do not be discouraged if the Bible does not immediately offer you any obvious answer. Patience and persistence will pay dividends. Sometimes one single sentence will be relevant to your particular situation. You will be amazed by the living nature of this Book.
It is not immediately possible to count, measure or analyse what we gain. Just as a plant needs time to grow from seed, so the words of the Bible gradually influence us; we find peace, obtain strength, get to know God and are able to hope again, thus they give our life meaning and substance. An inexhaustible source of energy is opened for us.
If you are not familiar with the Bible, begin by reading the New Testament, the second part of the book. (See the Bible's table of contents)
We suggest that you begin with the gospel of Mark or Luke Preferably you should read the chapters several times in small portions and think about them quietly The following questions may help you:
If a text is hard to understand, a translation in modern English will help you Try the New International Version, The Good News Bible. or the New English Bible
You may still have questions
The following chapters deal with these and other questions
